THE BIG HOUSE PLC:

A Professional Learning Community

by and for the Faculty of Casa Grande High School

On October 20, 2008, Dr. Anthony Muhammad, founder of the New Frontier 21 corporation, spoke to the faculty of Casa Grande High School in Petaluma, California about Building and Sustaining Professional Learning Communities.

One of the concepts Dr. Muhammad sees as central to PLC success is creating a teacher curriculum -- the best literature/research that will help us meet our goals. These are the books that Dr. Muhammad referenced in his talk.

Casa's Librarian Anna Koval heard this and thought that having a community of teacher readers was a great idea, and she suggested to Principal Linda Scheele and Assistant Principal Eric Backman the idea of a "professional reading community" at Casa -- basically, a teacher book club.

At the next staff meeting, Eric suggested the idea to teachers. About 5 faculty members seemed interested at first, and we hope more will become inspired to read with us and join our "professional reading community about professional learning communities."

If you would like more information or want to get involved, talk to Linda, Eric, or Anna.
